Jamie Foxx Will Star as Spawn in Todd McFarlane–Directed Film

Jamie Foxx is officially the new Spawn.

Deadline reports the Academy Award–winning actor will portray the famed antihero in a film adaptation. Todd McFarlane, who created the character and later debuted him in 1992's Spawn #1 will make his directional debut under Blumhouse Productions, the same company behind Get Out, Insidious, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity.

This will be the second time Foxx enters the comic book universe since he portrayed Electro in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This will also be the second time Spawn makes it to the big screen after Michael Jai White portrayed the antihero in the 1997 eponymous film. As for the latest iteration, McFarlane revealed it will be R-Rated and not an origin story. Spawn will also not be delivering many lines, however, Foxx was always the person he had in mind for the character.

"Jamie came to my office five years ago, and he had an idea about Spawn and we talked about it," McFarlane told Deadline. "I never forgot him, and when I was writing this script, you sort of plug people in, and he was my visual guy and I never let go of him. When I got done and my agents and everybody was talking about what actor, I said, I’m going to Jamie first and until he says no I don’t want to think about anyone else because I’ve never had anyone else in my head. Luckily, he hadn’t forgotten either. I said, 'Hey, I’m back to talk about Spawn again, and he was like, let’s do it.'" And now it's happening.

Spawn is projected to hit theaters in 2019.
