The franchise's inaugural standalone film sees Johnson and Statham back in their respective roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, this time linking up to throw a cinematic wrench in the world-ruining plans of Idris Elba's character Brixton. Deadpool 2's David Leitch directs from a script by Chris Morgan.

In an interview with Fandango last year, Leitch teased that Fast & Furious fans can expect Hobbs & Shaw to stay "true to the DNA" while expanding the characters' worlds. "I think what attracted me to that franchise is they really want to do something different," he said. "They understood that I wanted to sort of evolve their world, outside of the Fast world, and give it its own imprint."

The main franchise will continue its release strategy next year with the release of a Fate of the Furious follow-up. The untitled ninth Fast & Furious film will be followed in 2021 by the tenth, with both films currently under the care of returning director Justin Lin.
