Ryan Reynolds Shot New Scenes for PG-13 Version of ‘Deadpool 2’

The sequel's writers are promising a "subversive" framing device will make this PG-13 experiment not lame.

For some reason, movies with a PG-13 rating still exist. Deadpool 2, of course, wasn't one of those movies until the Powers That Be decided to unload a new non-R cut of the Ryan Reynolds vehicle this December.

The Deadpool 2 team even went as far as shooting some entirely new scenes for the PG-13 re-release, as writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed to /Film Monday.

"We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan [Reynolds] who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio," Wernick said. "They said, 'Yeah, let's do it. Fire up the cameras.' About two months ago we were out on soundstages shooting again. Ryan was in the suit and the gang was back together, Dave Leitch and Ryan and us having a great time and laughing. It comes together great so we're super excited about it."

Though Reese and Wernick declined to reveal anything further about the new scenes beyond affirming that the aforementioned framing device was "subversive enough" to pull in both new and returning viewers, Reynolds seemingly teased what fans can expect by sharing a photo of Fred Fuckin' Savage back in September:

That photo, of course, is a play on Savage's role in the 1987 megaclassic The Princess Bride. In the hopefully unlikely event that you have failed yourself by not seeing that gem of a movie, you should remedy that quickly. Also, for some quick context, a young Savage was featured in the comedy's own framing device which saw the Wonder Years star's character hearing the events from the film in the form of a story read to him by his grandfather.

Presumably, the Deadpool 2 rework—out Dec. 21—will follow a similar path.
