Reese Witherspoon Is Close to Returning for 'Legally Blonde 3'

Reese Witherspoon is apparently down to reprise the role she made iconic in the 2001 original.

The original Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon and Moonie (RIP), is a certified early 2000s classic. There is no debate. Legally Blonde 2? Not so much. That misstep, perhaps, can be corrected with the very-close-to-happening Legally Blonde 3.

Monday, Deadline issued a surprisingly humor-free report about Witherspoon being "near a deal" with MGM for the third chapter in the popular franchise. Even better, "most" of the original creative team would also return. Though the plot of the new entry is not being shared with the world just yet, Deadline has it on good word that the story will be "more about female empowerment" than the aforementioned Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde.

Though Legally Blondes, the 2009 straight-to-DVD misfire, technically counts as the third installment in the franchise, we're going to pretend that never happened. More recently, the franchise has received renewed interest among a new generation of fans thanks to the hit Broadway musical and resultng tour.

Back in March, Witherspoon was gifted with a 15,000-word dissertation on the American classic from reporter Lucy Ford. Fittingly, the paper was scented.

4 years ago I wrote my university dissertation on Legally Blonde, and I'm about to give it to @RWitherspoon herself. I may cry

Witherspoon's most recent movie was the Ava DuVernay x Disney fantasy A Wrinkle in Time, co-starring Oprah, Mindy Kaling, Zach Galifianakis, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. She can also be seen in the upcoming second season of HBO's Big Little Lies.
