Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba's 'Bad Boys' TV Spinoff Wisely Ordered to Series

'L.A.'s Finest' will see Gabrielle Union reprising her role in the 'Bad Boys' franchise as Syd Burnett, who's joined on the LAPD force by new partner Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba).

A Bad Boys TV spinoff starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba has been ordered to series, just one month after the film franchise secured an updated 2020 release date.

The previously announced L.A.'s Finest has been given a 13-episode order by the Charter Communications-owned Spectrum, USA Todayreports. The spinoff, which was passed over by NBC earlier this year, will now mark Spectrum's very first major series. In an Instagram post announcing the news, Union celebrated the fact that the "Will they or won't they?" vibes surrounding the pilot were finally over. "Cannot wait for you to watch Jessica Alba and I kick ass and take names," she said. L.A.'s Finest will also air via Bell Media in Canada.

Set in present-day Los Angeles, Spectrum's presumed hit—premiering in 2019—follows previously introduced Bad Boys character Syd Burnett (Union) and her new LAPD partner Nancy McKenna (Alba) as they learn to find common ground while LAPD-ing it up. Ernie Hudson and Duane Martin also star.

The 2019 release date places L.A.'s Finest in the uniquely advantageous position of debuting just one year before the long-awaited Bad Boys sequel finally—well, hopefully—hits theaters. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will reprise their classic roles for the repeatedly delayed third entry in the Bruckheimer-produced franchise, which—as of the most recent report in May—will be directed by Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi.
