A South Florida man accused of fatally shooting his wife and sharing a photo of her dead body on Facebook in 2013 is currently on trial, where he is expected to argue that she was killed in self-defense. The jury was recently presented with "graphic footage" of an argument between Derek Medina and his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, that allegedly took place "moments before" her death, according to the New York Post. The source of the footage is believed to be "an elaborate home security system."

"RIP Jennifer Alfonso," Medina reportedly captioned a photo of Alfonso’s dead body on Facebook. Later that same day, he elaborated even further: "I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. Love you guys, miss you guys, take care, Facebook people will see me in the news. My wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did. I hope you understand me." Medina, quickly dubbed the "Facebook Killer" across 2013's headlines, was quickly arrested and held in the Miami-Dade County Jail's psychiatric ward on suicide watch.

According to Medina, he was simply acting in self-defense against his wife. In fact, Medina’s attorney argues that Medina suffers from "battered spouse syndrome" and that Alfonso attacked him with a knife prior to the shooting. However, according to NBC 6, at least one medical examiner disagrees:

Alfonso had several defensive bullet wounds on her left forearm and all of the eight shots struck her upper torso or jaw area, Dr. Emma Lew testified. And, she added, the angle of the bullet pathways all indicate they were fired from above her.

If Medina is convicted of first-degree murder, he possibly faces life in prison.
