"There are honestly no words to describe how blessed I'm feeling right now," Jackson said.

Lena Waithe and Halle Berry (who also starred in the original film) are executive producing the new series, which follows Jackson and Richmond's characters as they carve out their own legacies. The pilot was penned by Waithe and showrunner Ben Cory Jones, known for his work on Insecure and elsewhere. Dime Davis will direct the episode, as well as the finale. Leland Martin and Lala Milan have also been cast in key roles.

The original 1992 film was based on a story by Murphy and helmed by House Party director Reginald Hudlin. The film was also notable for its soundtrack, featuring Babyface and Toni Braxton on "Give U My Heart" and Boyz II Men's "End of the Road."
