If nothing else, Chernobyl Diaries, the new horror flick co-produced and co-written by Paranormal Activity franchise creator Oren Peli, has a very interesting premise. Subverting the usual attractive-college-kids-get-killed-one-by-one conceit, or at least relocating it to a fresh setting, Chernobyl Diaries shows what happens when six tourists foolishly connect with an “extreme tour guide” who brings them to the city of Prypiat.
And why is Prypiat worthy of horror? It’s the former home to the workers affected by the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in Ukraine. In the film’s universe, present-day Prypiat is deserted—well, except for the homicidal, mutated quasi-humans who make visitors’ live nightmarish.
So, yeah, Chernobyl Diaries is ultimately a variation of the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, though we’re guessing that it’ll be nowhere near as memorable. The most we can ask for, frankly, is that Chernobyl Diaries introduce us to some striking, hideously deformed antagonists, or at least ugly creeps who’d qualify for inclusion in our gallery of The 15 Freakiest Mutants In Movies.
