Michael Caine has joined the growing list of actors who will never work with Woody Allen again. The British thesp, who won an Oscar for best supporting actor in Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters, told the Guardian he was "stunned" when he heard about the allegations made against Allen by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.
"I’m a patron of the NSPCC and have very strong views about pedophilia. I can’t come to terms with it, because I loved Woody and had a wonderful time with him," Caine said. "I even introduced him to Mia [Farrow]. I don’t regret working with him, which I did in complete innocence; but I wouldn’t work with him again, no."
Allen has been accused of molesting Dylan Farrow as a child in 1993. After she wrote an open letter in the New York Times in 2014, which was the first time she wrote about the alleged assault publicly, Allen responded with his own column. He avidly denied the accusations and more or less accused Mia Farrow of brainwashing her daughter into believing "he is a monster who abused her."
In January, Allen released another statement further denying the allegations. "I never molested my daughter–as all investigations concluded a quarter of a century ago," he said. "When this claim was first made more than 25 years ago, it was thoroughly investigated by both the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of the Yale-New Haven Hospital and New York State Child Welfare. They both did so for many months and independently concluded that no molestation had ever taken place."
While some former colleagues like Alec Baldwin and Diane Keaton continue to defend Allen, a large swath of Hollywood is distancing itself from the director in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Greta Gerwig, Mira Sorvino, Timothée Chalamet, Colin Firth and Rebecca Hall have all spoken out against the director.
