Issa Rae Will Appear Alongside Marsai Martin in 'Little' Movie

Issa Rae has officially hopped on to the Universal Pictures comedic film 'Little.'

Issa Rae has officially hopped on to the Universal Pictures comedic film Little. The Insecure creator and star will appear alongside Black-ish star Marsai Martin, who came up with the idea for the film. The film is set to open September 20, 2019.

The original version of the comedy was written by Tracy Oliver, the screenwriter behind Girls Trip, based on 13-year-old Martin's ideas. A later version of the script was written by Tina Gordon. Camilla Blackett, whose credits include Fresh Off the Boat and New Girl, is working on the latest draft of Little. Gordon, who was the screenwriter for Drumline, will direct the film with Will Packer producing via Universal.

Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and James Lopez will also serve as producers with Josh Martin, Martin, and Regina Hall serving as executive producers. The project for Universal will be overseen by Erik Baiers and Mika Pryce. Packer and Lopez served as producers for Girls Trip.

Martin, who plays Diane Johnson on Black-ish, will be making her feature film debut in the upcoming comedy. As executive producer and star of the movie, this marks a major moment in her career. Little is a story about a woman who gets the chance to start her life over as a girl (played by Martin).

This announcement comes in the wake of a controversy via a passage in Rae's not-so-new publication The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl that somehow took three years to upset some people and go viral. While some have criticized the passage of topic, others have noted the importance of understanding its context and the meaning of satire.
