What to Watch and Stream this Weekend

If you’re still feeling the effects of The Batman a week later, you’re not alone. A lot of people sat in theaters for three hours in the past week to watch Robert Pattinson transform into the superhero, and it’s totally understandable if you are heading back for a second watch this weekend. It seems like other studios anticipated the madness that would ensue following the film’s release, and gave it room to breathe. Naturally, not much else is hitting theaters this week. If you’re looking for something new to watch this weekend, the streaming services have your back.

Netflix has a big release this weekend with The Adam Project. The film has an all-star cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, and Zoe Saldaña, which makes it an instant must-see. If you’re looking for a drama to sink your teeth into, NBC debuted The Thing About Pam, starring Renée Zellweger, this week. If you are in the mood for laughs, Peacock’s got you. The first season of their new comedy, Bust Down, is now available for streaming. For those who missed it the first time around, Dune is also back on HBO Max. Whether you’re going back for seconds of The Batman, or staying home to catch up on the latest, check out or recommendations below of the titles we think are worth checking out this week. Check our choices from last week here, and come back next week to see what the rest of what March has to offer.

When: Mar. 11

Where: Netflix

Shawn Duffy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum series) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Red Notice) head to Netflix with The Adam Project, their latest collaboration since their 2021 box office hit Free Guy. That means multiple bags: Levy directs and shares production credits with Reynolds, who also stars as the Older Adam Reed, who crash lands in 2022 to go on an adventure with the only person who can help him: his 12-year-old self. Yeah, it’s one of those. The spec script had been floating around since late 2012, and at one point had Tom Cruise attached as its star. Over the last decade, and certainly, after taking in The Adam Project, you’ll understand why Ryan Reynolds was the right man for the job project. —khal

When: Mar. 10

Where: Peacock

Back in January, we told you that Langston Kerman, Jak Knight, Chris Redd, and Sam Jay’s Bust Down, the six-episode series that they created and star in, was going to be a problem. Set in Gary, Indiana (and wisely featuring Freddie Gibbs), the foursome deals with life while navigating their way through their wack casino gigs. There are no holds barred and no joke untested. It results in, well, a bunch of real shit that the realest people I know have given their stamp of approval. Something to really turn on, crack a cold one, and escape (and relate) to.

One of these days, we are going to talk about what Peacock has going on right now, but with originals like Bust Down and Bel-Air? We see you, and we see the timeline. Something’s definitely working. —khal

'The Thing About Pam'

When: Mar. 8

Where: NBC

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again—I love mess, especially when it takes place in the midwest. NBC is looking to deliver the kind of suspense and mystery that crime podcast lovers adore with their latest show, The Thing About Pam. The show is based on the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria. Her husband Russ reportedly found her dead after she had been stabbed dozens of times with a steak knife. Brutal, I know. He was convicted for the crime at the time, even though he insisted that he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. A thorough examination of the case took place and unveiled that Faria’s friend, Pam Hupp, was involved in the crime. The case was featured on several episodes of Dateline NBC, and became the subject of a popular 2019 podcast of the same name, which remains one of the most downloaded podcasts on Apple Podcasts. The series stars Renée Zellweger (also an executive producer on the show), Josh Duhamel, Judy Greer, Gideon Adlon, and Mac Brandt. One thing we know for sure about Zellweger is that she can act, so I’ll for sure be tuning in. —KR

Zoë Kravitz is hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

Zoë Kravitz is still on heavy The Batman promo duties. The actress will be hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time ever this weekend. Kravitz has been hard at work promoting the film alongside Robert Pattinson for what feels like forever, so SNL feels like the perfect place to end this press tour. The show will also give her an opportunity to show us her comedic side and I’m looking forward to seeing her in that light. Regardless of how you feel about her role as Catwoman, you can’t deny that that woman is charming as hell, (judging mostly on her recent interviews alongside the Tenet actor), so she’ll be just fine. It’s also Women’s History Month, so it’s only right that Kravitz will be joined by another woman on the show with Rosalia joining in as this week’s musical guest. I have high hopes for the actress and her SNL debut, and something tells me she won’t let me down. —KR

'Dune'

Where: HBO Max

Random story: In my area, there isn’t an IMAX screen. COVID shuttered the lone IMAX theater near me, so unless I am lucky enough to attend a press screening in IMAX, I have to a) hike it to see a film the way it's intended or b) grin and bear it. (I cringe at what’ll happen this summer with Nope, which was indeed shot on IMAX cameras.) That said, one of the worst experiences in viewing a film has been trying to watch Dune on my laptop on a plane. I technically haven’t sat through the film in its entirety once, although I’ve seen the film a few times in bits and pieces. With COVID and work nullifying my attempts to see Dune in theaters and HBO Max’s 30-day window to see Dune, I can’t wait to finally sit in the comfort of my home and (hopefully) take in Dune front to back before the Oscars later this month. I’m not sure it will make me enjoy this trek into the desert for spice(?), but at least it’s back on HBO Max, for a while. —khal
