Elliot Rodger's mass-shooting and chilling manifesto have left the nation asking the same question that arises whenever a tragedy of this scale happens: What can be done to prevent it?

Science of Us spoke to San Diego's Rady Children's Hospital clinical director of child and adolescent psychiatry and University of California, San Diego psychiatry professor Jeffrey Rowe for insight on how to spot people who, like Rodger, are threats to society.
