Elliot Rodger's mass-shooting and chilling manifesto have left the nation asking the same question that arises whenever a tragedy of this scale happens: What can be done to prevent it?
Science of Us spoke to San Diego's Rady Children's Hospital clinical director of child and adolescent psychiatry and University of California, San Diego psychiatry professor Jeffrey Rowe for insight on how to spot people who, like Rodger, are threats to society. While much of this is skewed towards Elliot Rodger because Rowe was thinking of him when offering this explanation, one thing remains certain: There are other disturbed people out there. The only way to stop them from doing what Elliot Rodger and others before him have done is to know what signs to look for.
