Deadpool 2 director David Leitch might be heading up a remake of the 1973 classic martial arts movie Enter the Dragon starring Bruce Lee, according to an exclusive report on Deadline.
The movie was an international hit with a bittersweet taste, as its release coincided with Lee’s death that same year. The 45th anniversary of his death was last week, on July 20. Although Leitch is described as being in “early talks” to direct a remake, Warner Bros. is already gearing up to find a writer to take on the challenge.
Leitch has an enviable resume in action cinema: besides Deadpool 2, which broke box office records for R-rated movies, he helmed last year’s Atomic Blonde, starring Charlize Theron, and was co-director of John Wick and John Wick 2.
Additionally, he will likely direct the Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba-starring Fast and Furious spin-off, slated for 2019. If all that wasn’t enough, Leitch has also worked as second unit director on blockbusters Jurassic World and Captain America: Civil War. Deadline even adds that he is a former stuntman himself, making his sensibility for action all the more refined.
Warner Bros. has allegedly been interested in an Enter the Dragon remake for quite some time. Spike Lee and Brett Ratner have developed their own iterations of what a remake could look like, but Leitch appears to be the closest to snagging the role of director. It’s a big role, after all: the movie’s success not only directly impacted all martial arts movies that came after it but also positively contributed to karate’s reputation overall in this country.
