Ever since its debut on NBC in the fall of 1966, Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek has been a cultural phenomenon. The long-running series succeeded in bringing authentic sci-fi themes and narratives to primetime television. After Star Trek: The Original Series went off the air in 1969, Star Trek has since lived on in blockbuster movies, video games, novels, and spin-off TV shows.
Roddenberry’s creation also brought to life a new segment of society: the Trekkie. Trekkies have the ability to memorize every line from every episode and dress up as their favorite member of the Starship Enterprise on the regular; some of them even learn how to speak Klingon, the fictional language of the Star Trek universe. Over the years, Trekkies have evolved from existing solely in dark basements and comic book stores to existing in the mainstream. And with the recent “geek chic” trend sweeping through Hollywood, even celebrities are coming out in droves to declare their undying love for all things Trek.
This Wednesday, at 8pm EST, The Science Channel will air a two-hour documentary titled Trek Nation, which takes a closer look at what inspired Trekkies in the first place. So to celebrate this comprehensive documentary, we’re taking a look at The 10 Hottest Celebrity Trekkies. Because that's what Gene Roddenberry would've wanted.
Emily Rose
10. Emily Rose
She doesn’t seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the show, but Haven star Emily Rose has admitted to watching her fair share of Star Trek as a kid. The actress is just one in a long line of examples of a younger generation of Hollywood type who grew up on science-fiction stories, and there's really no better place to start your love of the genre than with Star Trek.
Haven is a supernatural mystery show partly inspired by the Stephen King novel The Colorado Kid. Rose's pre-existing appreciation of the sci-fi/fantasy genre has helped her give life to her character on the show without it ever seeming like she feels above the supernatural-based scripts.
Karen Gillan
9. Karen Gillan
This ginger-haired hottie from BBC’s Doctor Who might have made a career out of palling around with an eccentric alien time-traveler, but she’s actually a pretty big sci-fi buff on her off-days as well. Gillan told a sweaty-palmed audience at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con that she still “geeks out” over Star Trek: The Next Generation to this day, which of course easily won the affection of every fan in attendance.
Freema Agyeman
8. Freema Agyeman
The incredibly hot, yet surprisingly under-the-radar former Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman isn’t just a closet Trekkie—she also mustered up the courage to attend a couple of Trek conventions when she was younger. Spotting an attractive young woman at one of those nerd gatherings is rarer than witnessing Sasquatch giving the Wolf Man a foot rub; thus, Agyeman's fandom could not be denied. As the second Doctor Who star on this list, Agyeman obviously channeled her lifetime affiliation to the Trekkie nation to bring gravitas to her role on the sci-fi show.
Mira Sorvino
7. Mira Sorvino
There was a time back in the ‘90s when Mira Sorvino was one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood. Mob movie regular Paul Sorvino's daughter's performance as a loveable prostitute in Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite woke heads up to her beauty and talent as an actress. Aside from being gorgeous and successful, however. Sorvino is actually a devout Trekkie.
The highlight of her fandom came at the 2003 TV Land Awards, when she presented Star Trek with the Pop Culture Award. During her speech, Sorvino revealed that she was a regular at Trek conventions as a teen and that she actually owns a replica phaser. Remember, this is information that most non-celebrity Star Trek fans take to the grave with them, so for Sorvino to openly admit it in front of the dozens of people that watch the TV Land Awards is pretty ballsy. And also very hot.
Rosario Dawson
6. Rosario Dawson
Even though she's been woefully underused as a leading lady, actress Rosario Dawson is still one of Hollywood's sexiest ladies. Her natural beauty is highlighted by the offbeat personality she brings to most of her roles, so it actually shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the quirky Dawson is a self-proclaimed and proud Trekkie.
Apparently she isn’t satisfied with just sitting back and watching reruns of the old show, either. Dawson recently campaigned for a role in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2. While many hot actresses pander to the geek crowd in order to ensure some extra ticket sales, Dawson' "I'm a nerd" musings feels genuine.
We wouldn't be mad at Abrams if he decided to slap a skimpy skirt and a low-cut Trek uniform on Dawson for a quick cameo in 2013's sequel. Hell, we'd probably buy the life-size action figure.
Megan Fox
5. Megan Fox
Megan Fox isn’t exactly a stranger to the sci-fi/fantasy genre having starred in the first two Transformers movies and the absolutely dreadful adaptation of Jonah Hex. The truth is, though, that most people didn’t expect this bombshell to be a real-life Trekkie at heart. Yet, there's a problem: We’re not sure if her Trek love is legit or just a façade to keep the basement-dwelling fans excited about her crappy movies.
If she's being genuine, there is no reason not to have Fox show up in a Trek sequel or an eventual TV show revival. Think about it—Whoopi Goldberg nabbed a part on The Next Generation just because she was a fan of the show. Giving an actress with actual sex appeal a brief cameo should be a no-brainer.
Carrie Underwood
4. Carrie Underwood
Usually the only thing that country music stars worship comes complete with a beard and a pair of sandals, but Carrie Underwood bucks that trend by openly admitting her undying allegiance to Star Trek and the Trekkie nation. The super hot Grammy Award winner didn’t just admit to watching The Next Generation on the regular—she actually owned up to thinking that Capt. Jean-Luc Picard is hot.
There's no proof that Underwood makes her husband, Nashville Predators player Mike Fisher, dress up in a Starfleet Commander uniform and do his best Patrick Stewart impression behind closed doors, but it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
Olivia Wilde
3. Olivia Wilde
Having recently starred in geek-friendly flicks like Cowboys & Aliens and Tron: Legacy, Olivia Wilde is the new unofficial queen of the nerdy sect; unfortunately, both of those movies suck. No matter how sexy it is that she enjoys starring in these sci-fi movies, her passion hasn’t exactly translated into picking good projects yet.
Recently, Wilde revealed to the world that she's a pretty big Trekkie in her downtime, proclaiming that she believes that the franchise is long overdue for a female captain. We, on the other hand, are carefree fans of any movie that gives Wilde more face-time, so J.J. Abrams should definitely drop Chris Pine like a bag of wet laundry and put her in charge of the Enterprise. We just hope she's aware that Starfleet protocol states that all female captains have to navigate the Enterprise in silk lingerie. Hey, those are the rules!
Angelina Jolie
2. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is the type of "sexy" that will still make jaws drop when she’s in her 70s. And she's also something that most beautiful women would never dream of being: a Trekkie. Jolie even went as far as telling John Stewart that she had a crush on Spock when she was a kid.
This leads us to believe that Jolie's adoption of a baby girl from Africa and a boy from Asia were attempts to procure her very own Uhura and Sulu, the first steps to assembling an eventual recreation of the entire Star Trek cast.
It’s unclear whether Jolie prefers The Original Series or The Next Generation, but given her preference in other areas of her life, we think it’s safe to assume she swings both ways.
Mila Kunis
1. Mila Kunis
It's undeniable that Mila Kunis is one of Hollywood's hottest actresses right now, so of course it comesas a bit of a shock that she's a full-blown Trekkie. Kunis claims to have watched The Original Series and all of its spin-offs, and she actually gets into arguments with others over which series is the best and why.
The Friends With Benefits star tell stories about her trip to the Star Trek Experience in Vegas, where she knocked back a few cold ones with characters from the Trek universe. Never have we been so jealous of the dude who dresses up as Quark for a living.
Kunis isn’t just some lame celebrity who claims to like this kind of stuff in order to appease the fans (like every actor in a Marvel movie ever)—she's a Trekkie with enough knowledge to put even fluent Klingon speakers to shame.
