The 10 Things We're Most Excited About At New York Comic-Con

Like the majestic Snow Goose of the north, the fall is a time of migration for comic book fans. But they won’t be rummaging for warmer weather; rather, they’ll be traveling to Manhattan for the annual New York Comic-Con, the Big Apple's biggest sci-fi/fantasy/geek convention. It’s the decadent and overcrowded place where every major comic publisher, video game developer, and movie studio head tries to unveil the next big things.

Between the countless comic announcements, the hours of exclusive TV and movie footage shown, and the millions of dollars of merchandise sold, there's almost too much going on for one person to fully experience. Fortunately, Complex is here to help. Prefacing our week-long coverage from the convention's floor, here's an advance look at The 10 Things We’re Most Excited About At New York Comic-Con.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem likely that we'll see any footage from forthcoming blockbusters like Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, or Man of Steel. On the positive front, though, Sony has scheduled a panel for the remakes of both Carrie and Evil Dead at the convention.

Being that the originals are such classics of the horror genre, we can’t help but be intrigued by these. The good news is that Sam Raimi is on as the producer of Evil Dead and Chloe Moretz (seen above) has the type of young femme fury that could bring some flare to the role of Carrie White.

Fingers crossed that each film's tone is established during its respective presentation. Both projects could go either way, and hopefully we’ll have a better indication of where they are both heading after this weekend.

With the announcement that Marvel will be holding a panel at Comic-Con focusing on its upcoming television properties, theories and hopes quickly surfaced. Will we get some casting announcements for the new S.H.I.E.L.D. show? Maybe they’ll talk about that long-rumored live-action Hulk show? We would also love to see some footage from the upcoming Avengers Assemble cartoon.

No matter what the announcements are, the prospect of Marvel taking over the small screen seems to be inevitable. While we’re concerned that the success of the Avengers movie will force all of the company’s properties to share the same look and tone as the film, we’re holding out hope that some of Marvel’s more experimental ideas from the ‘80s and early aughts will find new life on TV.

Over the past few months, Marvel has flooded us with vague teasers for its upcoming Marvel NOW! titles that will carry the company into the foreseeable future. We’re hoping that most of those teasers will be explained at Comic-Con so that all of these rumors will be put to rest.

Chances are, new comic announcements and promo art will spew forth from the House of Ideas like a marketing flood. There's also the added intrigue of maybe finally seeing the company do something with the Marvelman rights that it acquired years ago. One can hope.

Dark Horse is primed for huge winters in both 2012 and 2013 with the long-awaited return of Hellboy in Hellboy In Hell and the upcoming Star Wars book written by Brian Wood. Both projects look to be company highlights as we move forward, but we’re wondering what else the venerable indie publisher has up its sleeve.

What will happen after BRPD: The Return of the Master? What’s next for Brian Wood’s Conan? Are there any new horror titles coming up? Expect some big announcements to be made as Dark Horse continues to bring horror, sci-fi, and the supernatural to the page every month.

Image Comics has proven itself to be one of the top publishers in the land with long-running titles like The Walking Dead, Invincible, and Chew, as well as newcomers like Harvest, Saga, and Manhattan Projects. So what's going to be the company's next blockbuster title?

We already know that a sequel to Who Is Jake Ellis? is on the way, titled Where Is Jake Ellis?, but what else will we see? An announcement about more titles written by Grant Morrison seems probable; the same goes for additional information on Brian Wood’s Mara will take place. And don't count out the possibility of hearing about a few pleasant surprises.

After the brilliance of Scott Snyder’s “Court of the Owls” and “Night of the Owls” storylines in Batman, news came that he would be launching “Death of the Family” this month, featuring the highly-anticipated return of the Joker. But we’re not satisfied with knowing what’s happening in the present—we want the gossip on where Batman will go afterwards. That's why DC's Batman panel has us so excited.

What’s next for Scott Snyder’s titles? How will John Layman make Detective Comics different from the rest of the Bat titles? And, lastly, who is going to be introduced in the last issues of Grant Morrison’s Batman Incorporated? We want all of the dirty details on these books, plus info on Nightwing, Batwoman, Batgirl, and the others. It’s been a great year for the Batman family; here's to it not ending after “Death of the Family.”

One of the best bits of news to come out of the San Diego Comic-Con was the announcement that Neil Gaiman would be writing a Sandmanprequel for DC/Vertigo, with J.H. Williams III handling the illustrations. Yet, since then, there has only been darkness as we await even the smallest morsel of insight on the project.

Hopefully at the New York Comic-Con we'll get a synopsis or even a new piece of promo art about the book. Hell, we’ll even settle for just knowing what kind of word processor Gaiman will be using to write. Any tangible evidence that this book is actually happening will be more than enough to hold us over until its 2013 release date.

Ever since Superman was rebooted in DC’s New 52, the Man of Steel hasn’t quite seemed like himself. Sure, the red cape and blue costume are there, but Supes is really the company's only hero to not find a true footing in the new universe. As characters like Green Lantern, Batman, Animal Man, Flash, and especially Wonder Woman have flourished, the last son of Krypton has floundered.

In recent weeks, though, there have been rumors that superstar writer Scott Snyder (Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire) would be launching a new Man of Steel title, along with superstar artist Jim Lee. Hopefully, confirmation, or at least denial, is on the way. Plus, with Grant Morrison leaving Action Comics in a few short months, maybe the new ongoing writer will be officially announced as well. Again, there have been rumors that Andy Diggle would be taking over, but nothing is confirmed yet.

With a new movie, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, coming out next summer, DC’s big blue boy scout needs to reclaim his spot as the world’s greatest superhero. New York Comic-Con might be the best place to begin.

After news broke that The Amazing Spider-Man would be cancelled with issue #700 this December, fans were curious to see where Spidey would be heading. What better place than Comic-Con for Marvel to announce a brand-new ongoing Spidey series?

Will it still be written by Dan Slott, who has been killing it on Amazing for the last few years? This latest teaser seems to suggest that, but, again, until it’s confirmed, nothing is certain. There are more questions than answers when it comes to the Spider-Man franchise at Marvel, but one thing is for sure: The character will still be a big part of Marvel moving forward. Whether Peter Parker is still under the mask or not is a different story altogether.
