Jordan Peele Reaffirms That 'Us' Is a Horror Movie

Jordan Peele's unique take on filmmaking has critics searching for a term to categorize his movies. This has forced the director to take it upon himself and reaffirm the genre he is trying to master.

On Sunday, Peele took to Twitter to let it be known that his sophomore film Us is indeed a horror movie.

Due to the success of his directorial debut Get Out and the film's social undertones, Hollywood has made the mistake of miscategorizing Peele's films when it comes to recognition and awards. In fact, Get Out which has no overt comedy or any musical numbers was nominated for "Best Comedy or Musical" at the Golden Globes. Since then, it seems as though Peele has been on a mission to clearly define Us rather than to leave it in the hands of the award show committees.

Also, Peele's emphasis on Us being a horror movie adds to his previous statements that rejected the idea that Us will follow the trend set by Get Out and speak to American issues. During a special screening of the Us trailer, Peele explained that Us is not a movie about race, but is instead a film that will allow Black actors to simply act.

"Very important for me was to have a Black family at the center of a horror film," Peele told the audience gathered at New York's Bryant Park Hotel. "It’s also important to note that this movie, unlike Get Out, is not about race. It is instead about something I feel has become an undeniable truth. That is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies."
