It’s the last month of 2017 and SNL plans to go out with a bang. On Saturday, Saoirse Ronan is hosting SNL with musical guest U2. The promo for their appearance had Kenan Thompson attempting to speak in an Irish accent, which didn’t go so well because everyone couldn’t understand him.

The 23-year-old actress is making her SNL debut, and it couldn’t be a better time for her. She stars in the Greta Gerwig-directed, coming-of-age movie Lady Bird, a film centered on Christine McPherson (Ronan) who is the daughter of Marion McPherson (Laurie Metcalf). McPherson is a California nurse who is forced to work more to keep her family afloat after her husband loses her job. The dynamic of Marion’s relationship with her teenage daughter and the love they share is explored through an intimate portrait.

"It was fantastic from the get-go, really. Laurie is a very sincere person, and she’s a very open and generous actor. You learn a lot, just by being around her and seeing how willing she is to try anything. She really is open to going down any avenue," Ronan told Collider. "There’s so much thought put into what she’s doing, and then it takes ahold of her and she really embodies it. It’s amazing, always, to watch actors, especially when they’re as experienced as someone like Laurie is, just really inhabit someone totally and feel like it’s in their bones. That’s the way it felt when you would watch her, and it encourages you to do that, too, or at least want to do that. And just as people, I like that she’s upfront. There was no nonsense with Laurie."

For Ronan’s monologue, she shined by being so carefree. She joked about hosting the St. Patrick's Day edition of SNL a few months early before doing a whole song on how to pronounce her name. There were cameos by the cast (Leslie Jones, Beck Bennett, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant) who all attempted to say her name in their own unique way.
