As expected, AMC unleashed the first official trailer of The Walking Dead's ninth season during San Diego Comic-Con on Friday. And it appears fans are in for some big changes.

The nearly six-minute video begins with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) speaking to his archnemesis Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) from inside a holding cell.

“It wasn’t that long ago, we were fighting just to stay alive. But it’s not like that here anymore. We’re building. We’re growing. Still ready to deal with this world on its own terms,” Rick says. “No matter what happens, it’s human nature to come together.”

Negan being Negan made sure to squash that optimism with the quickness: “That’s real pretty picture you paint there, Rick. When do I get to see it?” he asks. “You think you got all of this on lock.”

We then get a glimpse of the growing dissent among the survivors, as Negan’s former army of Saviors clash with the new system. It’s clear Rick’s attempt at creating peace and harmony between the communities will not be an easy task.

During a Comic-Con panel discussion Friday, Lincoln confirmed he would not return to the show following the upcoming season.

“This will be my last season playing the part of Rick Grimes,” Lincoln told the audience. “I love this show. It means everything to me. I love the people who make this show. I’m particularly fond of the people who watch this show.”

Actress Lauren Cohan, who plays the role of Maggie, is also expected to leave The Walking Dead six episodes into season nine, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
