OITNB, which was created by Jenji Kohan, debuted in the summer of 2013, marking Netflix’s second original series. The dramedy was originally set in Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women’s federal prison in New York; but in season 6, audiences followed a number of main characters to Litchfield's maximum-security sister prison. The series was widely praised for its irreverent and comedic portrayal of prison life, while addressing issues such as race, sexuality, class, and the criminal justice system.

“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” Kohan told Deadline. “I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.”

OITNB’s final episodes will air in 2019.
