Black Panther made history Sunday night, becoming the first Marvel Studios film to ever win an Oscar.

The Ryan Coogler-directed superhero flick headed into the ceremony with a total of seven nominations, and has already taken home two awards: Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter) and Best Production Design (Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart).

"Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king," Carter said in her acceptance speech. "It’s been my life’s honor to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy, and thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen."

Carter, who was previously nominated for Amistad and Malcolm X, is now the first black woman to win the Best Costume Design award.

Black Panther is also up for Best Original Score, Best Original Song ("All the Stars" by Kendrick Lamar and SZA), and Best Picture. The film lost Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing to Bohemian Rhapsody.
