Longtime New Jersey politician, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, is going to face federal corruption charges, according to CNN

The democratic senator is accused of accepting gifts from a campaign donor in exchange for favors. Those gifts include close to $60,000 worth of trips to the Dominican Republic. The alleged favors include Menendez helping the man (a doctor) out when he was being investigated for allegedly overbilling Medicare, and working to kill a donation from a U.S. agency to the Dominican Republic that would hurt the man's business interests there.

Menendez was also reportedly investigated for allegedly soliciting prostitutes in the Dominican Republic, but those accusations went away when the prostitutes changed their stories, CNN reports.

Menendez is one of the top-ranking Hispanic politicians in the U.S. He has referred to the investigation against him as a "smear campaign."
