The death of Kate Spade, one of the most recognizable names in fashion, has already sent shock waves across the online community. Fellow designers, celebrities, and fans have been pouring out sympathies and sharing personal stories as they mourn the loss of the designer.
Spade was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment on Tuesday morning from an apparent suicide. A housekeeper reportedly found Spade after she hung herself in the apartment, leaving a note behind. She is survived by her husband Andy Spade and her 13-year-old daughter Frances Valentine.
“Kate Spade was more than a designer. She had a quirky visual language that captivated Bat Mitzvah girls and artists alike,” Lena Dunham tweeted. “She was also a staple of NYC who spread good will. My heart breaks for her family.”
Spade launched her line of handbags in 1993 with Andy, before the two married in 1994. The brand would eventually expand into a full-scale clothing and jewelry line. Spade sold her company in 2007. In 2016, she launched a new U.S. brand named after her daughter.
