Following extended Hollywood Foreign Press Association controversies, which notably resulted in a subdued unveiling of winners for the 2022 edition, the Golden Globes returned to the broadcast arena on Tuesday with host Jerrod Carmichael.

Carmichael, whose directorial debut On the Count of Three is very much worth your time and is now available, was announced as the returning ceremony’s host in December. Last year, Carmichael bagged an Emmy for his widely acclaimed Rothaniel special.

“His comedic talents have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live,” current HFPA president Helen Hoehne said in a statement shared with Complex at the time. “Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”

Heading into Tuesday’s ceremony, The Banshees of Inisherin—boasting impeccable performances from the In Bruges duo of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, as well as Kerry Condon—led the 2023 class of nominees with eight nods including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

Others contending in the category include Babylon, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Glass Onion, and Triangle of Sadness. On the drama side, Tár—featuring another pitch-perfect performance from recent Hot Ones guest Cate Blanchett—is nominated alongside Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, and the deeply personal Steven Spielberg entry The Fabelmans.

Contending series include Better Call Saul, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Wednesday, and more. Recognized performances, meanwhile, include Quinta Brunson as Janine on Abbott Elementary and Donald Glover as Earn on Atlanta.
