'Star Wars' Spinoffs About Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, and More Reportedly on Hold

The news was arrives just weeks after the film's standalone project 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' opened to disappointing box office sales.

Don’t expect another Star Wars spinoff anytime soon. According to a piece by Collider, Lucasfilm has reportedly put all planned Star Wars anthology movies on pause until further notice. The news arrives less than a month after the franchise's standalone Solo: A Star Wars Story film received mixed critical reviews as well as disappointing box office sales—and days after one rumor said Lucasfilm had nine more in development.

A long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff helmed by Stephen Daldry “was in active development”; the team that was working on the film is reportedly no longer involved. James Mangold (Logan) was heavily rumored to direct a Boba Fett standalone; it’s unlikely the project will begin production in the near future, if ever. The same can be said for the rumored Solo sequel as well as Yoda and Lando Calrissian spinoffs.

Sources told Collider the studio will instead devote its time and resources to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX, which will likely conclude the Daisy Ridley/John Boyega–led trilogy. The film is expected to begin production this summer and bows Dec. 20, 2019.

Lucasfilm will continue the development of a new Star Wars trilogy by The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson, reportedly based on a new set of characters. Additionally, the new Star Wars series by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will not be affected by the spinoff hold.

Solo raked in $84 million on its opening weekend and has now grossed $196 million domestically. Though these returns would be impressive for most other films, they were much lower than the initial projected sales. Solo is the first spinoff to follow 2016’s maiden "A Star Wars Story" voyage, Rogue One, which had a $155 million domestic opening weekend and wound up hitting $1.05 billion. Solo stands at a third of that amount and may not climb markedly higher.

There are many factors that could've contributed to Solo’s poor performance, such as the change of directors mid-production and the fact that it followed two of the year’s biggest blockbusters, Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2.
