Deadline reports that Universal Pictures is getting Lupita Nyong'o to star in the remake of the 1989 Hong Kong crime classic The Killer. Production is set to begin later this year.
John Woo will be directing the remake with Eran Creevy adapting the script. The remake will re-imagine the story using modern visual effects and extravagant stunts, but it will keep the plot intact to capture the essence of the original.
Nyong'o will reportedly play the main character, an assassin who decides to embark on one last hit job to fund a mission to right a past wrong. In the original, the assassin (portrayed by Chow Yun-fat) participates in a hit that ends up accidentally blinding a singer, which becomes his impetus for taking this one last job. The news follows Nyong'o's captivating performance as the badass Nakia in Black Panther.
