Soldiers are amazing as it is, but when the rest of us are running from trouble, it's the soldier who runs toward it. Armed with honor and bravery, the men and women who suit up in uniform everyday need little else (besides guns and ammunition of course) to accomplish their missions.
In the video game world, the soldier sometimes needs more speed, greater strength and at times cybernetic enhancements. There's no shame in that, especially when they're facing off against massive aliens or entire enemy armies by themselves.
And just like in real life, soldiers in games come in all shapes and sizes. We figured why not include as many of them as possible? From Final Fantasy to Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, here is our rundown of The 50 Greatest Video Game Soldiers.

50. Koopatrol
Game: Paper Mario (2001)
Bowser's troops are portrayed alternately as a bunch of unorganized layabouts and a hyper-dedicated army of elite soldiers. In Super Mario RPG, for example, they were called the Koopa Troop, and you'd occasionally see them marching in formation. Paper Mario continued that tradition by introducing the death squad Koopatrols, formidable enemies even for Mario.
49. Luc Deveraux
Game: Universal Soldier (1991)
Yes, they made a game out of this 1990 Jean-Claude Van Damme action flick. Actually they built the game on top of another game, Turrican 2 with a lot of Contra-like elements. While lacking the mid-air split ability of Jean Claude, high-jumping, fast blasting and super speed playing as UniSol Luc Deveraux gave us a thrill while it lasted.
48. Private George Gordon Haggard, Jr.
Game: Battlefield: Bad Company (2008)
We like to think there's a little Private Haggard in all of us. He loves his family, but he also loves blowing shit up. Can he reconcile those passions? Probably. He also seems to be the only soldier who's pretty much okay with being stuck in Bad Company, and we love his optimism.
47. Jax
Game: Mortal Kombat (1992)
He was once a proud soldier and now he’s a cyborg-armed contender for Mortal Kombat. Normally looking out for fellow soldier Sonya Blade, Jax is one to watch in battle. His ground shaking attacks and bone-breaking strikes bring out the nuts and bolts of his massive robot biceps.
46. Worms
Game: Worms (1995)
The worms are tireless soldiers, and they never back down in the face of danger. Literally never; in fact, they barely move. But they make up for their lack of mobility with a massive, insane arsenal that is made all the more improbably by the fact that worms don't even have arms. Yeah, we went there.
45. Space Marines
Game: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 (2009)
Dropping Orks and cleansing humanity is the goal of the genetically modified Space Marine super-soldiers. Descended from a self-proclaimed messiah, these warriors are super strong, mentally more acute and instillers of fear even in those they protect.
44. Army Men
Game: Army Men (1998)
There was something primal about playing with little green army men when you were a kid. The games may not have captured that quite as well, but that should not cheapen the sacrifices that the little dudes made every day when we burned them with magnifying glasses and sacrificed them to mountains of ants.
43. Mutated soldiers
Game: Doom (1993)
Stronger and more durable than most, the cursed enlisted men of Doom pose a great threat to gamers. Their ability to take bullets, shot gun blasts and the occasional plasma shot lets you know these guys aren’t serving their country Hell itself.
42. Sergeant Johnson
Game: Halo (2001)
Johnson is such a hardcore badass that he went from an unnamed, unimportant NPC in the original Halo to a full-on star in the subsequent games. He was the best soldier to take for a ride-along in the Warthog. He even makes the ultimate sacrifice late in the series, tossing his cigar to the wind and taking the fall so the Master Chief can yet again save the world. Always playing second fiddle, but we'll never forget him.
41. Alex Corde
Game: Section 8: Prejudice (2009)
Getting into the fight can sometimes be the hardest part for a soldier. Corde know this better than most, he drops in at 15,000 feet and has to fight his way down. Luckily, Corde has enhanced speed and armor which allows for durability and equally heavy offense. Not only does Alex have the suit at his command but an arsenal that makes him a walking army.
40. Frank Woods
Game: Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
Master Sergeant Frank Woods is one of the main protagonists of the Call of Duty: Black Ops games. By the time we catch up with him in Black Ops 2, he's pretty much old as dust, but that doesn't stop him from kicking ass.
39. Future soldier
Game: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (2012)
If anyone will create the first super-soldier, it will probably be Tom Clancy. Not all super-soldiers will be full of metal and gene-therapy but may employ hi-tech beyond our current means. Meet the soldiers of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. These guys can call in drones, use near invisibility and a robotic companion in the fight called a Warhound. Sam Fisher watch out, you could be replaced soon.
38. Magitek Armor soldiers
Game: Final Fantasy VI (1994)
Final Fantasy VI has a massive cast of characters and even more enemies, but the Magitek soldiers with their massive magic-fueled mech armor keep popping up throughout the whole thing. They escort Terra in the game's powerful opening scene, and they put up quite a fight whenever your encounter them. Plus, magic-powered mech armor! Right?
37. Dark Troopers
Game: Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995)
Where most of the Empire’s troopers are good for bad aim and light saber practice, the Dark Troopers weren’t going to go out like that. More robotic than human, the Dark Troopers had more firepower, more speed and more durability than the standard Stormtrooper. These guys weren’t going to forget the droids they’re looking for.
36. Marth
Game: Fire Emblem (1990)
Marth didn't become popular outside of Japan until he appeared in Super Smash Bros., but the displaced prince is a hero in his native country. He takes up arms and leads a rebellion to regain control of the kingdom he was exiled from, and he's a hell of a swordfighter.
35. Grunt
Game: Mass Effect (2007)
Being a massive reptile alien warrior isn’t enough. Grunt is the pinnacle of the Krogan physiology. He’s faster, stronger and angrier than your average sterile lizard trooper. Grunt becomes Shepard’s go to guy when the chips are down and the attacking forces are more than a regular Krogan can handle.
34. Cammy White
Game: Street Fighter 2 (1991)
There are multiple backstories for Cammy, depending on which Street Fighter game or spin-off you're playing. But in the original one from Street Fighter 2 she's a soldier on a British special forces team known as Delta Red. Nevermind that her uniform isn't exactly standard issue; she still kicks a lot of ass.
33. Agents
Game: Syndicate (1993)
I am a weapon, command me is a great mantra to start your day with. The agents of Syndicate are augmented, souped up and ready for war. They're strong, fast and can carry weapons that can crush multiple men with ease. True living weapons, the agents are put in storage when not in the field doing what they do best, wreaking havoc.
32. Marco Rossi
Game: Metal Slug (1996)
Metal Slug was the essential side-scrolling shooter for arcade goers in the 90s, with its colorful cast and four-player co-op. Protagonist Marco Rossi is undoubtedly the best; not only is he a massive badass, but he's also an expert computer hacker, too. He also undergoes a surprising amount of development in the series, eventually getting promoted to a major.
31. Nick Scryer
Game: Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (2004)
Nick Scryer is not super-fast or super strong. What he does have is an enhanced mind that makes this soldier a one-man army. Armed with telekinesis, pyrokinesis and brain drain powers, Scryer is more than a match for the shock troopers that come his way.
30. Captain Martin Walker
Game: Spec Ops: The Line (2012)
Walker is sent in to a storm-ravaged Dubai, covered in sand, to investigate a signal apparently sent from someone thought long dead. The similarities to Apocalypse Now come and go, but throughout the game Walker is a complex and dynamic character. Maybe more than any other soldier on this list he's definitely a different person by the end of the game—but has he learned anything? Depends on how you see it.
29. James Heller
Game: Prototype 2 (2012)
With giant claws and bloodied spirals of goo, the antihero in Prototype 2 was once a soldier. Unfortunately, once a soldier means now a genetic freak that is far beyond humanity. Enjoy the ability to leap massive distances, take injuries that would kill dozens and morph nightmare weapons out of your body. Prototype 2's most vengeful is far beyond an honorable discharge.
28. Kaim Argonar
Game: Lost Odyssey (2007)
At the beginning of Lost Odyssey Kaim is a victim of one of the most cliched afflictions in gaming: amnesia. He knows he's immortal, and he knows he's soldier. What he doesn't remember is why—on either count. Nevertheless, being immortal has its perks when you're a soldier.
27. Matthew Kane
Game: Quake 4 (2005)
You enlisted to fight the Strogg, an alien invading race. As Kane, you get captured and “stroggified” where you experience dismemberment, pain and eventually enhancement. Kane can use his newfound state to battle the Strogg and end the war once and for all. A true soldier overcomes any opposition, even alien body parts and horrid body mutilation and modification.
26. Captain John Price
Game: Call of Duty (2003)
Price is one of those hard-boiled soldiers that are an essential element of every good war video game. He's appeared across multiple Call of Duty titles, including the first two World War II-set games and all three Modern Warfare games. His gruff British accent is a mainstay of the series. Just try not to think too hard about how old that must make him.
25. Nathan Spencer
Game: Bionic Commando (1987)
A futuristic bionic operative, Spencer has an odd life. He has a strange relationship with his missing wife and multiple enemy forces are out to kill him. But he’s armed (literally) for the task. With a robot arm that can grapple and throw and special boots for mighty leaps, Spencer has seen life far past the NES console that he introduced to us on.
24. Jim Raynor
Game: Starcraft (1998)
Raynor was originally conceived to be a more grounded character in the far out sci-fi world of StarCraft. He left the soldiering life to become a marshal (excluding some time spent as an outlaw, of course), but quickly stepped up to the plate when things got weird and formed his own paramilitary group to challenge the tyranny of Arcturus Mengsk.
23. Cable
Game: Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (2000)
The psychic son of Cyclops, Nathan Dayspring Summers is the ultimate super-soldier. Not only is he a mutant but Cable is also half machine. His psychic powers and robotic body make Summers give even Wolverine pause. With years of military experience and larger than life guns, Cable is a man who gets more done before 9AM than anyone else does in a week.
22. Shepard
Game: Mass Effect (2007)
After saving the universe from Sovereign, Commander Shepard “dies” and is recovered by a shadow organization. Through massive cybernetic implants and cutting edge technology, Shepard is revived to save the day once more. Shepard may be part machine here and there but he’s all man when he’s staring down alien invasions or laying it down on the ladies.
21. Adam Jensen
Game: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011)
Besides sporting a Keanu Reeves look, Jensen is a great example of how far a human being can go above and beyond mere human capabilities. Starting off seriously wounded, Jensen begins a trip of espionage, corporate corruption and scientific physical engineering. Deus Ex challenges gamers to think about trans humanism at its best and worst.
20. Bill Rizer
Game: Contra (1987)
This iconic Contra protagonist was designed as a tribute to none other than the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. As such he's completely ripped, pretty much indestructible, and a total beefcake. He also likes to carry around two assault rifles sometimes, because fuck bad guys.
19. Supercop
Game: Crackdown (2007)
Crime in the future has gotten so bad that regular police and soldiers are not enough. In the first and second Crackdown titles, you play as an Agency sanctioned armored bad ass who is able to increase your speed, strength, agility and firepower. Despite overwhelming odds, you could shut it all down with the flip of a car or kicking a gangbanger into the horizon.
18. Sam Fisher
Game: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (2002)
Lieutenant Commander Sam Fisher is an elite soldier and member of Third Echelon, a clandestine black ops espionage group. He excels at sneaking around, and he's no slouch in a firefight, too. And he's always got a sexy arsenal of James Bond-like spy weapons at his disposal. In fact, he's a little bit like an American James Bond—only without all the things that James Bond does besides kill dudes.
17. Overwatch Elite
Game: Half-Life 2 (2004)
If the Combine Elite of Half-Life weren’t superior to regular humans enough, enter the Overwatch Elite. These are the crème de la crème of Gordon Freeman’s jackbooted troubles. Stronger, faster and using heightened senses and body armor, the Overwatch work for Black Mesa and dare anyone to test their mettle.
16. Doomguy
Game: Doom (1993)
Doomguy, as he's colloquially known, is the protagonist of Doom and the original video game space marine. Yes, this handsome fellow started it all. In every Doom game he's a soldier of the United Nations Space Marine Corps, and he's also one of the classic silent protagonists. Those aren't his only virtues, though; he also kicks a shit ton of ass.
15. Point Man
Game: F.E.A.R. (2005)
With the ability to slow time perception and bioengineered reflexes, Point Man was the only choice to hunt his mother’s dark legacy. He’s the strong silent type while his freakish brother is more talkative. The troops out to stop his approach are no match for Point Man.
14. Alex Mason
Game: Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
Alex Mason plays a big part in both Black Ops games. His missions take him all over the world, and he spends most of the first Black Ops recounting them. Some players may find his interrogation throughout this game a bit brutal, but then you find out that he probably assassinated JFK. Okay, so maybe he's not such a great soldier—but he's such an interesting character we just had to include him.
13. Tyrant
Game: Resident Evil (1996)
Goliath sized and stitched together, this soldier can shrug off bullets and move in a blur. Tyrant was built as the ultimate living weapon and become the go-to foot soldier for Umbrella. Tyrant was obedient, super strong and only stopped by rocket launchers. Forget medals for this soldier, he only wanted STARS.
12. Raiden
Game: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
Sure, he's not as cool as Solid Snake. But the slightly effeminate Raiden eventually becomes a force to be reckoned with, particularly in the most recent Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. In his first appearance, Raiden is a rookie member of the FOXHOUND squad, but it's eventually revealed that he was also a feared child soldier.
11. Terran Ghosts
Game: StarCraft (1998)
In the future, humanity is threatened by the insectoid Zerg and the ethereal Protoss. When faced with such odds of advanced technology and overwhelming hive creatures, mankind found a way to boost its troops. Enter the Ghosts; psychic, enhanced special soldiers with missions of near impossible odds. Sadly, the only mission that could not be accomplished was the much desired StarCraft: Ghost game.
10. The Soldier
Game: Team Fortress 2 (2007)
The Soldier of TF2 is a true American hero: tough, armed to the teeth, and completely insane. And before fighting in Team Fortress 2, the Soldier spent a good chunk of his life just killing Nazis. Like the end of Inglourious Basterds, but all the time.
9. FemShep
Game: Mass Effect (2007)
If you've been playing Mass Effect with a male protagonist all this time then you've been missing out. Not only does playing as FemShep change the entire dynamic between Shepard and the crew of the Normandy, but she's an even bigger badass than male Shepard is. Plus her voice actor is way better.
8. Cloud Strife
Game: Final Fantasy VII (1997)
Cloud Strife is a member of the elite military unit SOLDIER—or so he says. In reality he was just a normal Shinra soldier who idolized Zack Fair, the real deal. But that didn't stop him from ultimately stepping up and saving the world from Sephiroth. So delusional liar or not, Cloud was a great soldier.
7. Solid Snake
Game: Metal Gear (1987)
Take Clint Eastwood (before the empty chair) and Kurt Russell and throw in Snake Eyes from GI JOE and you get Metal Gear’s gene-enhanced hero. Cursed with ruined relationships and complicated plots, Snake has navigated giant mech battles with an enhanced body that has sometimes been a curse.
6. Zack Fair
Game: Final Fantasy VII (1997)
If Cloud was just a phony emulating Zack, imagine what the real deal is capable of? Unlike Cloud, Zack actually is a member of the elite fighting force SOLDIER. And like many soldiers, he dies too young. That's when Cloud takes up his mantle (and identity), but thanks to FF7 spin-offs like Crisis Core we've seen the whole story from Zack's perspective too.
5. Captain America
Game: Captain America: Super Soldier (2011)
Avengers assemble! When weakling Steven Rogers volunteers to take a super soldier serum, he becomes more than just a peak human machine, he becomes a living legend. While other super-soldiers needed armor and mechanical enhancements, Captain America has a peak body and an indestructible shield. Just that has let him fight Nazis, robots and cosmic cubes.
4. Marcus Fenix
Game: Gears of War (2006)
When we first met Marcus Fenix in the original Gears of War, he was rotting in an abandoned prison at the end of the world. But like his namesake, he rises from the ashes and becomes one of the most badass soldiers in any game. The COGs wouldn't be the same without him.
3. Samus Aran
Game: Metroid (1986)
From the NES to next gen consoles, bounty hunter Samus Aran has donned body armor and chased space pirates for decades. Besides being able to morph, jump and power bomb, the biggest surprise this enhanced mercenary brought to the table was being one of the first female video game stars.
2. Master Chief
Game: Halo (2007)
The Master Chief is iconic for so many reasons. His training and upbringing, not to mention all those dangerous surgeries, have made him the ultimate soldier (the super suit MJOLNIR armor helps too). And he's shown more than once that he's willing to sacrifice himself to save humanity—the sign of a true hero.
1. Prophet
Game: Crysis (2007)
Aliens beware because next to Master Chief, Prophet is a hard-core soldier following orders and saving the day. Armed with the hi-tech Nanosuit, Prophet jumps higher, hits harder and delivers the pain. Include his fellow armor bearer Alcatraz and the soldiers of Crysis are more than a few good men.
