1.8 Million Fewer People Watched the MTV Video Music Awards This Year

The 2013 VMAs had some memorable moments, including Miley’s attempts at twerking on Robin Thicke and an ‘N Sync reunion, and although this year’s edition featured a nearly 20 minute medley by Beyonce and lots of Nicki Minaj’s ass, nothing really stood out in the same way (maybe with the exception of Riff Raff and Katy Perry’s Justin and Britney referencing outfits).

Viewing figures were down from last year too, with the telecast drawing an average of 8.3 million viewers compared to 2013’s audience of 10.1 million. Neither of those come close to the 2011 VMAs, which drew in a record 12.4 million viewers.

In comparison, the 2014 Super Bowl had 111.5 million viewers.

As you may have seen from your Twitter feed on Sunday night, the VMAs prompted lots of social interaction, with the show mentioned in 12.6 million Tweets.

Do you think the MTV VMAs are an essential part of the music calendar? Did you tune in?
