Hulu has shared the first trailer for the documentary Look at Me: XXXTentacion, which promises to examine the controversial rapper’s rise to fame.

Directed by Sabaah Folayan, the trailer touches on the Florida artist’s wild popularity on SoundCloud as well as the allegations he assaulted his then-pregnant girlfriend. Originally commissioned by the Fader back in 2017, the movie has long been in production but finally got its premiere at SXSW Film Festival 2022 this year.

Featuring never-before-seen archival footage of XXXTentacion, who was shot and killed in June 2018 at age 20, the doc is set to be one of the most in-depth looks at him to date. Expect interviews and commentary from those close to X, including family and some of his ex-girlfriends. Premiering on Hulu on May 26, the project gets its name from one of his most famous songs, “Look at Me!”

Despite his huge levels of popularity, XXXTentacion has remained one of the most controversial figures in hip-hop. At the time of his death, he was facing numerous legal charges including false imprisonment, witness-tampering, domestic battery by strangulation, and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman. He had denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Recently, he made two posthumous appearances on Kanye West’s Donda 2. Other rappers to show support for X include Lil Wayne with multiple posthumous collabs, Trippie Redd, and Kendrick Lamar in a divisive tweet shared in 2017.
