Confederate statues are a goddamn eyesore. Thankfully, something is finally being done about it. The latest act of national improvement comes by way of a petition from Portsmouth, Virginia resident Nathan Coflin calling for a Confederate monument to be replaced by a statue of Missy Elliott.

The petition, spotted over the weekend by the Washington Post and others, had just under 24,000 signatures at the time of this writing. "Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it," Coflin says in the petition description. "Let us come together in getting City Council to erect this statue in honor of Missy Elliott and all those in the great City of Portsmouth who work it each and every day." Missy, as you already know, was born in Portsmouth.

The proposed Missy statue would replace a 35-foot obelisk that's marked with the phrase, "To Our Confederate Dead." According to the Virginian-Pilot, Portsmouth mayor John Rowe has called for the monument to be moved to Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Aside from the predictable backlash of pathetic Confederate stans, the Missy petition has garnered widespread support online:

Missy's untouchable career is far from over. Earlier this month, Missy—who's currently in the middle of recording her seventh album—inked a deal with the William Morris Endeavor (WME) talent agency. Her most recent release, the Lamb-featuring single "I'm Better," dropped back in January and has since topped 23 million views on YouTube.
