Playboi Carti and YoungBoy Never Broke Again are rumored to be working on a collab project after the latter was spotted wearing a chain donning Carti's Opium label moniker.
Fans from both camps began theorizing about a joint effort following a repost from Carti that saw YoungBoy wearing an Opium chain while he was promoting his Never Broke Again merch. While none of the rumors have been confirmed, celebrity jeweler Wafi amin Lalani added to the speculation by posting to his Instagram jewelry account @jewelryunlimited that the Opium chain had been gifted to the Baton Rouge rapper, and specifically reported news of a joint album in the works.
While the pair have never officially released music together, YoungBoy has previously paid homage to Carti's unique style, boasting gothic-style makeup in multiple music videos similar to that of Playboi Carti. YoungBoy said on Clubhouse in 2021 that wearing makeup like that made him feel "comfortable."
“I like painting my face, putting makeup on,” he said on Clubhouse at the time. “I like to look in the mirror and see everything black. Like my eyes and shit. That’s one hundred percent real! That’s me being myself."
“I feel comfortable that way. That’s some shit from MAC [Cosmetics] I made my engineer go buy. It give me like the goth feeling, like rockstars.”
Carti's most recent release, 2020’s A Whole Lotta Red, shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 100,000 first-week sales, and featured appearances from Future, Kanye West and Kid Cudi.
As for YoungBoy, he just dropped off his most recent project Richest Opp on May 12, which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
