In his new video for Expensive Pain’s title track, Meek Mill takes to the streets and the skies as he raps about his unparalleled success while flexing his wealth.
Showcasing a variety of chains, expensive watches, private jets, and fancy get-togethers, Meek uses the song’s ghostly, minimalist backdrop to speak candidly on his impressive run in the industry. “Look at thе skyline from the penthouse like Walt Disney, dawg/Send her to the mall and tell her, ‘Get some Dior,’” he raps.
At the Carters Vision-directed video’s halfway mark, Meek stops the track to show footage of his younger self manifesting the fame he now enjoys. “I don’t wanna be dead, I don’t wanna be in jail, I want a hundred fuckin’ million,” he can be heard saying in the clip. “It’s easy to pull the trigger, but it ain’t easy to move your mom out the hood. That’s a real man job, that ain’t for suckers right there. We tryna be young kings, all that other shit played out.”
The new visual comes on the heels of the Grammy-nominated MC’s fifth album Expensive Pain, which dropped on Friday and features appearances from Kehlani, ASAP Ferg, Moneybagg Yo, Young Thug, Brent Faiyaz, and others.
“I think this is probably one of my favorite albums where I express myself,” Meek told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. “I actually said expensive pain on a song with Uzi when we was in a booth rapping. I said, ‘You ain’t rich, your stash can’t pay my drug bill.’ Basically we smoke a lot of weed and stuff like that, and I was playing it for Brent Faiyaz one day in the studio, he heard me say that, he was like, ‘That bar hot.’ He was like, ‘That’s a fire word, expensive pain.’ He was like, ‘That should be an album title.’ And I start thinking about it and then I stuck with it.”
