Once again, Nigerian music is setting pace for the rest of the world.

Bubbling up from Lagos and rippling out across West Africa, Alté is the alternative sound that’s already setting the standard in the UK, Europe and across the globe. Just as Afrobeats slipped into the mainstream to reshape pop and rap, particularly in the UK, Alté is already gearing up to follow suit.

Right now, the sound is on the precipice, very much ready to dominate and make its mark on the mainstream. Keen to make sure the scene is documented and celebrated the right way, a group of its core instigators have put together a short film to clue newcomers in on the nascent sound, tracing its roots, and getting to the heart of its defining traits.

Created by NATIVE’s TeeZee, Ademola Falomo, San Omosa, Chukwuka Nwobi and Power Horse, WTF Is Alté? is told from the vantage point of the artists right in the thick of it. The mini documentary stitches together a mixture of footage from live shows and interviews, sticking the viewer right in the centre of the story. It’s an intensive crash course, but an essential watch for the uninitiated.
