Three years ago, London-based songwriter Kianja emerged with her debut single, “Closer”. Backed by brooding, post-club electronics, it introduced us to a singer with an unbelievably nimble voice, flitting effortlessly between the sultry, lower registers and cloud-grazing falsetto. This has become something of a hallmark for her and with her new single, “Place For Me”, it’s only gotten more effective.
The new drop, as is fitting for the times, is one of her more sombre offerings, but it’s far from doom-and-gloom. Instead, she hopes this song will offer some reassurance that there is light at the end of the tunnel, even if it’s not always easy to see it.
“Everything is uncertain,” she says. “I wrote this song when I was worried about the future and wondered if I would ever feel a true sense of belonging. Nobody is alone in this feeling. I want this song to comfort you in those doubtful moments.”
