A powerful indictment of the ambivalence shown towards youth violence and the overall decay of the country.

At the top of this year, we got the somewhat bittersweet news that Guvna B would be releasing a new album—which dropped just last Friday—with an impressive roll call of features, including Ghetts, DarkoVibes, Kierra Shard, Kae Kurd, and Michaela Coel no less. And we say bittersweet, because as much as we’ll always welcome new music from the Guvna, the inspiration for much of the album—particularly lead single “Bridgeland Road”—was a racist attack he was subjected to, which ultimately went unpunished despite his best efforts.

Two singles followed, “Amplify” with DarkoVibes and now “U Get Me” with Ghetts, and the latter’s just been given a video with Kevin Hudson in the director’s chair. Both the track and the video are high impact and do an admirable job of detailing just how serious the problem of youth violence is, particularly in the deft balance of Ghetts’ eye-witness reports of his youth and return to Plaistow with cold, hard statistics.

That’s another throughline with this album; Guvna’s insistence that looking away or sticking your head in the sand can’t be excused anymore—if it ever could. Even the album cover drives that message home with a close-up shot of his cut-up eye taken after he was attacked.
