Donell Jones celebrated one of his deep cuts during his VERZUZ battle against fellow hitmaker Joe on Thursday night.
Jones brought out 702 to perform "Get It Together" — a song he wrote and produced — during one of the night’s special moments. The song, which came out in 1996, was the group’s introduction to the Top 100 charts and was eventually certified gold.
The "R&B Nights" installment kicked off at 9 PM EDT, with fan voting integrated in real time to determine a winner. Some major stars were in attendance, notably Tyrese, who had previously posted a reel promoting the August 20 event on Instagram.
The guest appearance landed in Round 7, where Jones countered Joe's "More & More" with the 702 cut. Fans ultimately sided with Joe in the matchup, awarding him 63 percent of the vote to Jones's 37, according to the Complex official scorecard.
Jones came into the night framing the matchup as something other than a straight battle. "For me, it's not really a Verzuz. It's a celebration," he said ahead of the event. "We not going to do what the other guys did where its beefing back and forth." He added: "We grown ass men. We both have two great catalogs. We're going to treat it as such."
In a pre-battle video, Jones reinforced that spirit, calling the night "really about black excellence, man. Us really sharing the stage together and sharing our catalog," and noting that the two artists have "been in this game for about 30 years."
Joe's deep catalog, which spans collaborations with Mariah Carey, Big Pun, Nas, and 50 Cent, alongside hits including "Don't Want To Be A Player" and "Faded Pictures," gave him consistent ammunition throughout the night.
The battle is part of the ongoing Complex and Apple Music chapter of Verzuz, which launched at ComplexCon Las Vegas the previous October with a Cash Money vs. No Limit showdown. The Tank vs. Tyrese installment earlier this year featured a string of celebrity guests.
