The current administration's disenfranchisement of immigrants has been a hotbed topic since Trump took office. But, even the controversial way Trump extends his executive power to enable ICE was no match for America's true President.
Rihanna made a rare music-related appearance when she honored Mary J. Blige at this year's BET Awards. Although she didn't grab the mic and bless the audience with a tune, she did use her voice as a call to action against the country's immigration policies.
"I think in any situation where it's as devastating as what's happening in America right now with the immigrants you have to be as loud as you can. You have to raise as much awareness," the proud Barbadian explained to The Root during a backstage interview. "And not just that, just as a whole—as a nation—put all your heads together, put all your voices together, and be as loud as possible. That the only way politicians and the government actually listen, when they feel that their country is as concerned as the matter is concerning."
This is not the first time Rihanna has condemned the country's views on immigration. During an interview with The Cut, Rihanna explains that her fame does not place her any less of an immigrant.
"Wherever I go, except for Barbados, I’m an immigrant. I think people forget that a lot of times. I think they see Rihanna the brand," she told Matthew Schneier. "But I think it’s important for people to remember, if you love me, everyone out here is just like me. A million Rihannas out there, getting treated like dirt."
She's also used her new career as a fashion mogul to take Trump head on. Last week, Rihanna debuted her second Fenty collection which several pieces that proudly pay homage to her status as an immigrant. She then let it be known that this decision was a direct shot at President Trump by captioning an Instagram post showing off one of the pieces with: "hey [Donald Trump]."
