The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” was already the mosty played song in Spotify history, and now it's become the first song to cross the 4 billion play threshold in the platform’s history.
The track originally came out in Nov 2019 on The Weeknd’s fourth album After Hours.
Spotify celebrated the moment with commemorative video with an Abel Tesfaye trophy.
“I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people let alone billions! I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen,” said The Weeknd in a statement.
Abel Tesfaye is no stranger to shattering records on the platform. Last February became the first artist in Spotify history to cross 100 million monthly listeners and is currently the most listened to artist on the platform with 113 million monthly listeners.
According to Variety, the song has received anywhere from $15.5 million to $17.5 million in royalties, with approximately another $4.5 million in publishing.
Last week, the artist hinted that the final album in the After Hours/Dawn FM trilogy was coming. He also recently partnered with L.A. nonprofit organization School on Wheels to support more than 1,000 students who are "experiencing homelessness from kindergarten through twelfth grade."
