Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s On The Run II concert at South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium killed more than 90,000 square feet of Bermuda grass, according to the Associated Press.
The university field maintenance will reportedly spend Monday laying new grass. The school’s assistant athletic director who oversees turf and landscaping services, Clark Cox had his team place a protective hard cover over the grass for the concert’s stage and equipment, hoping that the cover would conserve the field. However last Tuesday night, it was discovered that the grass has died.
“We would not have done this if we believed there was a safety issue,” Cox said, per Sporting News. “My job and our entire ground staff's job, our No. 1 priority in everything we do, is safety and welfare of our student-athletes.” Cox also shared that the sod isn’t difficult to install.
Over 40,000 people went to the concert, including the school’s football coach Will Muschamp and football team members. New turf costs $150,000 to $200,000 but will be paid for by the concert promoters.
The On The Run II Tour has experienced some other mishaps, including a random person who ran on stage as Bey and Hov were walking off stage during the Atlanta stop on Saturday night. The individual ended up getting tackled.
