Back in October, Maroon 5 debuted a standalone single called "Don’t Wanna Know" assisted by Kendrick Lamar. Though Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine had collaborated with K-Dot in the past, the song marked the group’s first joint effort with the Compton rapper. But it wasn’t the only hip-hop collaboration they had up their sleeve.
On Thursday night, Maroon 5 released Red Pill Blues, their sixth studio album. It includes guest appearances by Kendrick’s TDE label mate SZA as well as ASAP Rocky. SZA is featured on the album’s lead single "What Lovers Do," while Rocky hopped on the promotional single "Whiskey."
"Combining genres is something that we’ve always been interested in," Maroon 5 lead guitarist James Valentine told People. "It’s influenced a lot of the way we’ve approached the band from the start […] We were a rock band, but we were really influenced by hip-hop records and soul music, so mixing that together has always been one of our favorite things."
Red Pill Blues also includes appearances by Miami-born artist LunchMoney Lewis and singer-songwriter Julia Michaels. You can listen to the album now on Apple Music or download it on iTunes. The project is also up on Spotify.
