Cardi B’s rapid ascension into mainstream culture was both fascinating and surprising. Though the Bronx-bred rapper had pursued a music career for several years—assisting a number of records and dropping multiple mixtapes—many people were convinced she would be nothing more than a reality TV star. But that all changed exactly one year ago today when Cardi released her breakout single “Bodak Yellow.”
Since the track’s official debut, it has received five platinum certifications, a 2017 BET Hip Hop award for Single of the Year, as well as two Grammy nominations (Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song). “Bodak Yellow” also led the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three straight weeks, making her the first female rapper to secure a solo No. 1 hit since Lauryn Hill in 1998.
