It's been quite a while since Chicago rapper Joey Purp shared his 2016 mixtape iiiDrops, introducing everyone to his distinctive voice and impressive talents. Thankfully, he's returned today, and with news of a new project on the horizon. With the release of his new Don Robb–produced song "March 12th," Purp has returned to remind everyone what he's capable of.
The newly released loosie comes ahead of a new project sometime later this year, which will finally give us the follow-up to the fantastic iiiDrops. Over the mesmerizing and melodic, Purp offers up the type of urgency he is so good at delivering. Fake Shore Drive, aka the most in-the-know place for Chicago rap, promises Purp's new project is on the way sooner rather than later.
When Joey Purp broke through with iiiDrops, he did so alongside some of Chicago's finest. Accompanied by Saba, Vic Mensa, Mick Jenkins, and Chance the Rapper, Purp was and is surrounded by great company, but what made iiiDrops so essential was all him. If the formidable "March 12th" is any indication of what he's been cooking up since he's been gone, here's hoping that follow-up arrives as soon as possible.
