French Montana kicked off a debate earlier this week when he said he could go "neck to neck" with Kendrick Lamar. The "Unforgettable" artist said he "might outshine" K. Dot if they headlined a festival together, at least on a hit-for-hit basis. French stopped short of saying he's a better rapper, as Kendrick has "masterpieces," but he did say he has "more hits."
When DJ Akademiks shared an Instagram post comparing what he claimed were French's RIAA certifications, Montana chimed in to silence critics who said he can't carry a song on his own. “Most of kendricks features Too!" Montana wrote in response to people commenting that French's only hits have features. "I never compared myself I just stood up for myself. we all know kendrick one of the goats.”
It is worth noting that the figures in the Instagram post appear to be inaccurate. Per the RIAA website, "No Stylist" is platinum, but not three times platinum like the Instagram post noted. "Ain't Worried About Nothin," meanwhile, is not listed on the site.
French himself contested similiar numbers circulating on social media. When a Twitter account compared the Billboard Hot 100 performance of French to that of Young Thug, whom he's currently feuding with, French said he has "20 platinum records."
"'No Stylist' 2 'Lockjaw' 3 'Pop That' 2 'Ain't Worry Bout Nothing' 1 'No Shopping' 2 'All the Way Up' 2 'Welcome to Party' 1 platinum!!! Plus more I'll stop there lol."
Hot 97 decided to break down whether French could beat Kendrick in a battle "hit for hit," coming to the conclusion that French would come out on top in a slim victory.
The rapper responded to the debate on Twitter by defending his stance further. "I GUEST IM NOT CRAZY AFTER ALL," he wrote.
He went on: "FRENCH MONTANA VS KENDRICK LAMAR HOT 97 TOUGHEST CRITICS SCORE 6-4 FRENCH MONTANA WINS WATCH FOR YOURSELF! ITS GOOD TO STAND UP FOR YOURSELF TO ALL YOU UNDERDOGS OUT THERE. WE JUST TALKING HITS AND NOTHING ELSE BY THE WAY."
It's clear Montana has no issue with Kung-Fu Kenny, but he does have an issue with Young Thug.
