Dave East isn't here for your memes. The New York rapper said on social media that he doesn't understand the appeal of Lil Nas X's tongue-in-cheek country-rap hit "Old Town Road."

Dave East really out here saying “Old Town Road” is wack. What y’all think? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/7gcadTif8k

"This f**king 'Old Town Road' sh*t is f**king wack," he said. "I don't know what the f**k is going on with hip-hop or rap but...that sh*t is wack with a cape on it. It's super wack."

The declaration tore Twitter apart with users declaring for either side.

I can’t believe twitter dragging Dave East. That old town road really is wack. It’s not hip hop, it’s for these wave riding new niggas and white kids who wanna be down. And they keep saying “ i never heard a song from Dave East”. I suggest u listen to a song from Dave East then.

Old Town Road is a cute guilty pleasure...fun song...borderline parody...but fun...anyone who thinks it’s in the same league or conversation as Dave East has no business talking rap music

Noted rap writers and hosts attempted to keep the peace.

Anyone looking for nuance on the internet has to live in a state of constant disappointment. Lil Nas X himself has yet to directly respond.
