Lil Wayne, Young Money founder, forefather of modern rap, and mentor to Drake and Nicki Minaj, has spoken. In a new video posted to Twitter, Tunechi praised his protege Onika over her new album Queen, calling it one of the greatest albums of all time.
"First of all, I just want to congratulate the beautiful queen, Miss Nicki Minaj, for the beautiful album, Queen, which is, to date, in my opinion, one of her best albums yet," he says to the camera.
"I'm not gonna go out there on a limb and say it's her best album, because I can still listen to songs [from] when she was about...when she was a teenager, and I still hear vocals and lyrics from there that are, to me, the best thing she's ever said in her life,” he continues. “So, I'm specific like that, but to date, it's one of the best albums yet—and I don't mean out of her catalog. I mean period."
Nicki expressed her gratitude to Weezy multiple times during both of her recent Beats 1 interviews. She was signed by the Louisiana rapper back in August 2009, and nine years later she’s released her fourth studio album under his Young Money label. The 19-track, highly-anticipated project features Wayne as well as Ariana Grande, Eminem, Labrinth, the Weeknd, Swae Lee, and Future.
In the video, Weezy also gushed about Nicki’s track “Barbie Dreams,” a hilarious flip of Biggie’s “Just Playing (Dreams),” which generated a lot of buzz over the weekend for its scathing jabs at her various male rap peers. "And The Barbie Dreams song. I love the fuckin song, everybody love the song, but I really wish the song was just, like, a dedication song to me,” he says. “I really wish that was Barbie's dream."
Since Drake and Nicki dropped huge albums this year, Wayne could round out a trifecta of Young Money releases with a new album of his own. Back in June, Weezy offered fans an update on Tha Carter V, which was once given a 2013 release date, during a show in Miami. “Just to let y’all know I had a meeting today, it wasn’t a long meeting," he teased the audience. "Just so y’all know the meeting was about the release date of Tha Carter fucking V.”
