Tim Kaine Compares Presidential Campaign to Spaceship in 'E.T.' on 'Late Show'

Potential First Dad Tim Kaine took a quick break from his Make America Love Hillary tour on Thursday to appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, his first late night talk show appearance as the Democratic vice presidential nominee. And during an interview with Colbert, he joked that joining Clinton's team was like being "kidnapped."

"You know that scene in 'E.T.' when they go up into a big spaceship," Kaine said. "You know, there's just such a huge operation of a presidential campaign that has been going for 20 months and it's just massive."

Kaine also offered up his thoughts on some of the comments Donald Trump made this week, when the Republican presidential nominee suggested Clinton is a "bigot." Kaine came to Clinton's defense, recounting her work to end segregation in Alabama schools. He then called Trump an "idiot" in Spanish, an on-brand assessment from the Virginia senator who has used his knowledge of the language to reach out to the Hispanic community.

"At his early career, Donald Trump was a real estate guy who got sued by the Justice Department for discriminating against people in housing," Kaine said. "Hillary Clinton has got a track record all the way back to being a middle schooler in trying to advance priorities for others. Donald Trump is for himself."

But it wouldn't be a real Kaine appearance without a nod to his talents on the harmonica. So at one point, Kaine joined Late Show band Jon Batiste and Stay Human for a minute-long performance. You can watch it in the video above.

Kaine set the Twittersphere aflame when he first came to prominent national attention during his Democratic National Convention speech, where his charmingly awkward body language and stilted jokes reminded viewers of their dads.
