Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey informed his employees via email Tuesday that they will be allowed to work from home for good, BuzzFeed News reports. Dorsey conceded that it was likely their offices wouldn't be open before September, while all in-person events have been canceled for the remainder of the year. Those individuals who need to physically show up to the office, for doing things like maintaining servers, will still be required to come in.
"We've been very thoughtful in how we’ve approached this from the time we were one of the first companies to move to a work-from-home model," a Twitter spokesperson told the outlet. "We'll continue to be, and we’ll continue to put the safety of our people and communities first."
After Twitter started to encourage its employees to work from home in early March as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread across the United States, Jennifer Christie, the company’s Chief HR Oficcer, told Buzzfeed News that those reluctant about a change in work structure would gain a different perspective during this process. "People who were reticent to work remotely will find that they really thrive that way," Christie said.
On Saturday, Facebook and Google extended their employees' work-from-home orders to the end of the year. Facebook expects that most of its offices will not be open until July 6, at the earliest, while Google already reversed course on their return date of June 1.
