One person was killed and five others were injured during a shooting on a Greyhound bus in Southern California on Monday, ABC reports.
Per California Highway Patrol communications supervisor Steve Loftus, an unidentified man was taken into custody. Authorities are still trying to determine a motive, but the shooting took place around 1:27 a.m. local time on a bus near Lebec, California—which is around 80 miles north of Los Angeles. The bus was heading from Los Angeles to Northern California when the gunman opened fire. After the shots, the driver pulled over and was able to convince the suspect to exit the bus. When he got off, he left behind his firearm.
Police are still investigating the shooting. California Highway Patrol's Sgt. Brian Pennings explained during a press conference on Monday that incidents like these are "extremely rare."
"In my career I'm not aware of this ever happening," Pennings said before stating that the driver "handled the situation professionally and appropriately to minimize any more possible victims."
The five surviving victims were transported to nearby hospitals. The suspect was taken into custody after the driver dropped him off at an exit south of Bakersfield, California.
