Racist Airbnb Host Hit With Huge Fine After Canceling Asian Woman's Reservation

An Airbnb host who canceled Dyne Suh's reservation over her race must pay a hefty fine and attend a college course in Asian-American studies.

Back in April, Dyne Suh shared an unfortunate story about an Airbnb host who canceled her reservation at the last minute because of her race.

In speaking with The Washington Post, Suh detailed what happened in February: Her and her fiancé made a reservation to go skiing at Big Bear Lake in Running Springs, California. She later asked the host Tami Barker if she could add a few more guests, and she agreed to allow it. But as the group was heading to the cabin during harsh weather conditions, their host suddenly had a change of heart and sent several racist messages ("One word says it all. Asian") to Suh before canceling her reservation completely.

Now, Barker is paying for her actions. CBS News is reporting that she has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and attend a college course in Asian-American studies, as per the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing on Thursday.

Edward Lee, Barker’s attorney, released the following statement:

Suh filed a complaint with Airbnb that resulted in Barker’s ban. Further investigation by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing revealed Barker violated "civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination in places of public accommodation," according to the LA Times.

As part of an agreement with state officials, Barker will personally apologize to Suh and will also perform community service at a civil rights organization.
