A protest outside of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's rally in San Diego on Friday night has led to arrests and police deploying pepper spray and tear gas. This is the second time in less than a week that law enforcement has clashed with Trump protesters. On Wednesday, a protest outside of a Trump rally in New Mexico turned violent. Chicago's huge protest crowd in March led Trump to cancel a rally, citing fear of violence.
Trump held a rally at the San Diego Convention Center Friday afternoon that he said drew a crowd of 25,000.
Tensions rose once Trump protesters and supporters came face to face outside of the rally.
According to the San Diego Police Department, there were about 1,000 protesters at the rally.
CNN reported that although there were some "violent altercations" between the two groups, they mostly shouted at each other. Trump supporters reportedly chanted "USA, USA" and "Build the wall" while protesters shouted "F*** Donald Trump" and "F*** your wall."
According to CNN, riot police continued to push protesters and reporters after telling them to disperse. When some sitting protesters didn't disperse, riot police proceeded to arrest them.
Police then deployed pepper spray.
The San Diego protest comes ahead of the California primary on June 7.
