Police arrested a man in Florida for attempting to cash a winning lottery ticket at the store where he had stolen a handful of tickets.
Newsweek reports that authorities have identified the man as 27-year-old Herbert McClellan. He’s been accused of stealing 13 scratch-off lottery tickets from a Speedway convenience store in Clearwater, Florida—and one of the tickets had even won him $30.
The Clearwater Police Department shared a statement about McClellan’s arrest to Twitter, writing, “So much for being lucky at the lottery. Herbert McClellan stole 13 scratch-off tickets from a convenience store and immediately tried to see if any were winners. When one was a $30 winner, he went back to the same store to cash it in. Officers were called, and he's in jail now.”
Speedway employees recognized McClellan when he returned to the store and called the police. He’s since been charged with petit theft and dealing in stolen property. He’s now being held in jail with a $12,000 bail and is awaiting trial.
